With the sound of the viking horn and medleys of Abba, Muumi, walking poles, the sour and sweet tastes of rye breads and herring, and the aroma of Christmas wreaths we could only be in place, The Scandinavian Show at Olympia, London. The weekend happened to be one of the sunniest and warmest since the summer but that didn’t deter the visitors who queued around the block to get in.
Representing Finland we decorated the space with with seasonal wreaths, bowls and vases filled with berries/roses and our hand crafted hydrangea trees. The furniture and mirror we borrowed from Amwell Street’s antique furniture shop, Pigment and Patina, www.pigmentandpatina.com Our visitors loved our designs and craftmanship. We took so many of bookings for our November Christmas workshops that we are planning more for December.
The Swedish Chamber of Commerce, www.scc.org.uk fed us well with Daim bars and Sweden’s Clas Ohlson homestore, www.clasohlson.co.uk entertained with their very own ‘Wheel of fortune’ game; Norway’s Den Norske Klub www.dennorskeklub.co.uk were our friendly neighbours and Nordic Design Forum www.nordicdesignforum.co.uk had a very stylish display of craftwork; and representing all Scandinavian design was Scandium www.skandium.com; as usual they had a great selection of glassware and ceramics; and finally the Finnish Church http://www.finnishchurch.org.uk/, also fed us with tasty sandwiches with salmon/cream cheese and reindeer meat/puolukka berries.
We really must mention some other business folk we met over the weekend – Hus & Hem http://www.husandhem.co.uk/ a houseware shop in Herefordshire for a Smorgasbord of Scandinavian design; and Maria Ornberg a very gifted Landscaper whose company Greenlines Home and Garden Limited, www.greenlinesdesign.co.uk had created an excellent miniature garden for the show.
I think most us felt that the weekend was a great success. It was truly fantastic to see so many visitors who had travelled far and wide to attend this event. We are all hoping for a bigger and better show in 2011!
